Job Description

Edge & Security Services (ESS), a newly formed group in Windows & Devices (W+D) org, provides integrated, intelligent, and secure services to all of Microsoft s engineering teams to ingest, protect, and distribute Microsoft products at scale. Our charter is with following responsibilities:

  • Lead and provide a comprehensive suite of PKI lifecycle management services. We maintain the highest standards of both logical and physical security to ensure that Microsoft s brand is trusted and secure.
  • CodeSign all products delivered to Microsoft s customers. We sign all software binaries installed on a customer s machine as well many of Microsoft s services components.
  • Provide cross-industry malware scanning capability to Microsoft. To help ensure that all product teams are compliant with policy, we provide an anti-malware scanning service that is powered by many of the major third party Anti-Malware engines (including Windows Defender).
  • Provide regional digital manufacturing services to sign product bits, release, store, and distribute those to global customers.
  • Manage Microsoft s Product Activation and Licensing services.
Today, our services are actively utilized for Windows, Windows Server, SQL Server & Office. Over 250M licenses are issued to our customers every month. Our unique engineering challenges are scale we have close to 5B+ transactions per month, and a diversity of workloads we sign and scan everything from drivers to 4k AAA games, and the stringent security requirements, both physical and logical, required to meet Microsofts business needs. Ultimately, we are responsible for code signing, anti-malware scanning, and distributing software for all of Microsoft, and what we do has a company-wide impact. We are a global team.High level overviewPrincipal Software Engineering Lead is a role encompassing both the aspects of program delivery and people management in a highly matrix organization. This position is responsible for leading the DevOps team providing overall leadership to the team, setting direction and goals for the team, ensuring all commitments are met. It would require developing strong partnerships with other groups, and disciplines globally to influence stakeholders and product teams. This person will lead a team comprising of individual contributors from the software engineering discipline.Responsibilities and common tasks include -
  • Setting up engineering strategy for the team both from technical and business front.
  • Ensuring that all programs are delivered with agreed upon business value, on time and highest quality.
  • Ensuring that all features embody engineering best practices, efficient, scalable architecture, elegant design, and high-quality implementation.
  • Managing a rapidly growing software engineering team of strong individual contributors.
  • Leading design, code reviews to ensure consistently high level of design and implementation.
  • Driving the DevOps mindset and SRE culture withing the team.
  • Ensuring performance and security criteria are met for the services and tools developed.
  • Communicating policy & technical directions to all levels within group and cross discipline. Scheduling, status reporting and presenting solutions, defending designs are all integral part of the job.
  • Contributing to talent hiring, cloud migration strategy, and org wide initiatives.
, Desired Educational qualification: BE / B Tech /MCA or equivalentAbility to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Screen: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.Skills (must have)
  • Experience:
    • Total of 15+ years of demonstrated work experience in the Information Systems industry.
    • 10+ years of solid Design/Software engineering experience using large/complex application using various technologies.
    • 5+ years of experience in People Manager Role build and grow teams.
  • Technical skills:
    • Very strong software engineering design, development and testing, experience.
    • Proficient in C++, Java, C#, .NET Framework or comparable programming environment, SQL, Web Development, and test methodologies.
    • Deep understanding of security, threats, vulnerability detection & management etc.
    • Good understanding of design / architectural patterns and automation platforms.
  • Engineering practices:
    • Experience with Agile, TDD, SOA and test methodologies.
    • Good experience on Requirement/Design/Code Review & Inspections practices.
    • Good on estimation practices: Effort and Schedule.
    • Experience in development processes like creating technical and architectural documents and QA processes like designing test plans, functional testing, end to end scenario automation, performance, and security testing.
  • People management skills:
    • Ability to motivate and influence team to deliver success.
    • Ability to lead, coach and state precise goals, objectives, and performance success criteria.
    • Ability to manage high and low performers.
    • Aligns team s commitments with organizational strategic directions.
    • Effective utilization of SWE resources.
  • Other skills:
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
