Job Description

  • The instructor must lead students through a curriculum explaining the properties of the different types of piping in common use, as well as the methods used for joining them.
  • Students must learn how to read blueprints and engineering diagrams, and perform the math necessary to measure cuts and calculate the materials needed for a given installation.
  • Instructors also teach their students about local building codes and state ordinances, as well as appropriate workplace safety measures.
  • Training programs include a practical hands-on component, giving students the opportunity to learn the physical skills and dexterity necessary for plumbing.
  • This includes measuring, cutting and fitting metal or PVC pipe; choosing the appropriate adhesives or solder to join them; and sealing the joints to prevent leakage. The instructor must be able to demonstrate all of the necessary skills, while modelling appropriate techniques and safety standards.
  • Instructors must be alert and mobile enough to monitor the activities of multiple students or student teams at all times, evaluate their work and ensure their compliance with safety standards.
  • Aside from their classroom role, instructors are responsible for a set of administrative duties. In schools that purchase their instructional materials from an outside source, instructors must review and master the materials, and note any areas where they diverge from local standards.
  • Develop their own curriculum in-house, and instructors might be required to contribute new materials or upgrade old ones as necessary to remain current. Instructors must also maintain a suitable inventory of plumbing supplies and equipment for instructional use, and must devise and mark an appropriate set of examinations for the students.
