Job Description

  • The Commercial Manager is responsible for representing, and managing, the BASF Precious Metals business in India and SE Asia. Precious Metals refers primarily to Platinum Group Metals (PGM).
  • The position is accountable for growing the customer base and generating business with existing and new customers in alignment with the global CCM strategy and in support of the achievement of the business goals for the assigned sales territory. He/she shall also support any internal BASF business and provide customer support in the Region.
  • The role is responsible for all precious metal-related contract negotiations with 3rd party customers, ensuring highest profitability and supply security for BASF group companies.
  • The position is furthermore responsible for monitoring market developments in the assigned sales territory and providing market analysis and recommendations based on such developments.
Main TasksCommercial
  • Establish, develop, and maintain relationships with external parties and internal stakeholders across the entire PGM value chain in India & SE Asia (customers, suppliers, competitors, etc) to enhance understanding of local market dynamics and drive commercial effectiveness and results.
  • Represent, manage, and grow all product lines and services offered by the BASF Precious Metals global business unit. These shall include
    • PGM metal sales and services (leasing, hedging, etc)
    • Precious metals chemicals (PGM-based chemical intermediates, salts, solutions, and related products)
    • Recycling of PGM-containing catalysts / materials / scrap
  • Identify new business/sales opportunities and enhance existing customer relationships, market share and profitability.
  • Develops and implements strategies relative to service positioning and pricing to maximize value generation.
  • Responsible for sales forecasting via the sales and customer service organization.
  • Negotiate and execute legal agreements to support business transactions.
  • Work closely with Regional (Shanghai/Tokyo) and global (London/New Jersey) trading desks.
  • Acts as the regional liaison to ensure cooperation and coordination between marketing, CCE, CCP, supply chain partners and other cross-functional team members.
  • Participant in Catalyst Division / CCM initiatives and new projects, as appropriate.
Marketing and Strategy
  • Monitor India & SE Asia precious metals market trends and support global market intelligence initiatives on PGM supply/demand analysis. Understand market microeconomics, PGM market trends/behavior and use this info to create own view on PGM market development and trends.
  • Monitor India & SE Asia tax and customs regimes to understand government actions that may impact supply and profitability for BASF in India & SE Asia; communicate impact of such actions to the global team and develop mitigating steps.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain relationships with relevant trade organizations and X-BU teams to monitor India & SE Asia market developments. Participate in conferences, meetings, and other trade events.
  • Participate in annual business planning/budget processes by providing forecasts and insights based on local market knowledge.
Regional Supply Chain / Logistics
  • Work with Regional Supply Chain and Customs teams to support the import of PGM and PGM related products into India and SE Asia.
  • Work with CCM Global Procurement teams to identify and on-board local suppliers in India & SE Asia, as applicable.
Risk management
  • Manage BASF counter-party on-boarding process including CCM credit and AML reviews.
  • Monitor credit exposure and manage credit risk of relevant counterparties.
  • Ensures compliance with CCM s precious metals terms and conditions as well as to the general BASF T&C.
Minimum Education and Qualification Required for the Position
  • Education: Bachelor s degree in Science/Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business Management; knowledge in chemistry/engineering would be a plus
  • Working Experience: At least 10 years of experience in precious metals sales and marketing for industrial applications in a global/regional organization; sales & marketing experience related to the automotive/chemical industry in India and SE Asia is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, structure, negotiate and execute profitable transactions.
  • Technical: Ability to manage opportunity and risk at the interface of commercial and industrial applications; understand and connect implications of one on the other.
  • Communication and Influencing:
    • Fluent in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work in matrixed, global environments across multiple time zones, successfully engaging across the organization to drive business results. Interact with, and influence key people both within the company and externally, through superior communication, interpersonal influencing, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Travel: Willing and able to travel up to 50% of the time, locally and internationally as required.
