BD TCI is dedicated to serving BDs customers and patients thereby contributing its bit towards advancing the world of health.Position SummaryAs a member of the MDS R&D Lean Engineering leadership team, The Associate Director, Lean Engineering, TCI will lead a team responsible for value analysis and value engineering of several MDS portfolios of products.As such, they will be responsible for designing, implementing, and building product as well as ensuring products meet both product manufacturing and customer requirements. They will lead a bright and motivated team of engineers in the execution of programs delivering meaningful value to BD and its customers. This team is set to enable significant growth for MDS and BD over the next several years.The Associate Director, Lean Engineering, TCI is also responsible for leading the development and deployment of transformational product development processes and tools enabling sustaining and value engineering, cost innovation, and new product development efforts through digital tools, methodology and mindset. They shall champion the digitalization of product development practice through mastery of Lean Design Control with Polarion ALM software.They will utilize their deep medical device development practitioner experience to be mentor and coach to the TCI R&D organization.In this highly cross-functional role, the Associate Director will lead their teams to collaborate with multiple manufacturing sites and design centers across geographies within BD including the Materials COE, the Biomaterials Testing COE, the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) COE, and the Analytical Chemistry COE as well as with Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing Technology Innovation, program management office and Operations.Educational BackgroundBS/B. Tech/B. E degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering degree required.An advanced degree in a complimentary engineering discipline and/or an MBA are preferred.The successful candidate will have a proven record of product development excellence and leadership in the medical device industry with a minimum of ten years of experience. (i.e., Systems, Software development, Production/Biomedical /Chemical/ Materials Engineering / Instrumentation)Professional ExperienceAt least 15 years relevant experience in concept and product development and design with at least 10 years product development and design experience in medical devices/products.In order to effectively lead strong technical teams, they should be well-versed in the execution of all aspects of product development including requirements management, design, development, verification and validation, transfer to manufacturing, and other aspects relevant to successful product commercialization. The candidate must have a deep understanding of mechanical / electro-mechanical design as well as material science. Must have experience with high volume manufacturing is preferred. They must also have solid R&D experience employing modern, lean product development methodologies across multi-disciplinary teams in order to champion organizational transformation.The candidate must be a self-starter, have a strong work ethic, and have excellent influence and communication skills with experience in driving effective change management. Experience as a creative problem solver, a passion for continuous improvement, and the ability to foster a close-knit team are all required attributes.The candidate will have a reputation and record of effective servant leadership, collaboration with peers, subordinates, and superiors as well as outside advisors and customers. They should also have demonstrated clear history of attracting, developing, and empowering technical talent, with an emphasis on building engineering competencies, technical excellence, and engineering robustness. The candidate will have earned an undergraduate degree in engineering or similar technical discipline. An advanced degree in engineering will be advantageous.Job ResponsibilitiesThe Associate Director is accountable to deliver, with high technical competence and capability, cost-conscious product designs, analyses, reviews, prototypes, engineering studies, and products suitable for design verification and validation for a wide ranging product portfolio.The Associate Director is responsible for engineering design and development for all products across two highly complex businesses and platforms. The R&D teams will provide capabilities in critical areas such as Mechanical Design and Design Evaluation. The Mechanical Design capability is responsible for developing the detailed designs for all aspects of product development and any updates to existing products. .The Associate Director is the functional leader of a multifunctional R&D team who works with cross-functional teams. They voice strong functional views and also add to business discussions and challenge across boundaries.The Associate Director is accountable for leading the TCI organizations growth and mastery of Lean Design Controls and the adoption of Polaron ALM software as well as other key tools to drive digitalization of BDs product development processes. The Associate Director is also responsible for supporting the transformation of all MDS TCI projects into a digitalized format. They will be responsible for instilling a digital mindset in all associates enabling a more seamless tool adoption.The Associate Director is expected to leverage skill sets within MDS as well as develop and acquire talent with new skill sets as needed to deliver on these responsibilities.As a highly cross-functional role, the Associate Director and the teams will also collaborate with multiple organizations across geographies within BD including the Materials COE, the Biomaterials Testing COE, the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) COE, and the Analytical Chemistry COE as well as with Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing Technology Innovation, program management office and Operations.Knowledge and SkillsSuccessful track record of development and implementation of R&D organizational tools, processes, standards and metrics, including establishment of best practices.Deep understanding of disciplined product development through phase gate processes, regulatory and quality requirements, as well as high-volume manufacturing experience.Experience in navigating a matrixed organization. Ability to work independently and think strategically.Ability to partner with business leadership and align actions in the R&D organization to meet the objectives. Ability to influence senior level leaders regarding matters of significance to the organization.Deep practitioner experience of developing new medical device products, including multiple successful end-to-end product development cycles for complex medical systems.Deep practitioner experience of commercializing new medical device products, line extensions or streamlined sustaining engineering changes.Technical organizational development, including a strong track record of attracting, mentoring, developing, and empowering technical talent.Development and implementation of design and development plans based on business needs.Successful track record of identifying new opportunities, developing concepts, and transferring product concepts into product development. Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate business case assumptionsBusiness acumen to align innovation actions with business objectives for gross profit margins, knowledge of business context and goals, finance and marketing knowledge, knowledge of legal agreements and IP processes.Interaction and successful negotiations with external partners.Mechanical design and development including computer aided modelling and simulation.An ability to articulate the level of resources necessary to execute product development projects successfully.Exceptional written and oral communication skills required. Experience leading global teams is a strong plus.Demonstrated cross functional problem-solving skills.Budget development and management.Organizational planning and development including resource planning and hiring.,
