ETS provides capabilities for all stages of the Firm s software development lifecycle, enabling productive coding, functional and integration testing, application releases, and ongoing monitoring and support for over 3,000 production applications. ETS also delivers all workplace technologies (desktop, mobile, voice, video, productivity, intranet/internet) in integrated configurations that boost the personal productivity of our employees. Application and end user services are delivered on a scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure composed of seamlessly integrated datacenter, network, compute, cloud, storage, and database services.Application Infrastructure (AI) strives to maximize the business application developers productivity by centrally providing the core development lifecycle tools, core reusable software libraries and middleware thus minimizing duplicative efforts across silos. We are also focusing on the lifecycle into production and provide tooling to monitor systems, applications, hosts, logs and infrastructure inventory.Our goal is to provide infrastructure that is broadly reusable, scalable, reliable and highly performant to meet the demanding needs of our applications.Job ResponsibilitiesThe Morgan Stanley Development Environment (MSDE) department is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to drive the reliability engineering, operational support and customer consultation services for some key products. MSDE forms part of the Application Infrastructure organization and is responsible for shaping the SDLC within Morgan Stanley by implementing the tools, systems, and processes used by 12,000+ developers in the Firm for software development and deployment. Reporting to the Site Reliability Engineering Lead for MSDEs Engineered products, this role requires growing SRE capabilities to deliver reliable systems, without wasteful operational effort, and understanding MSDEs products front to back to maximize developer productivity across the entire Firm. This is a prod-side, operational role requiring participation in an on-call rotation, and also a role that will require strong influencing skills amongst a technical stakeholder group. However, much of the day to day operations can be delegated to ops staff in the team. The successful candidate will likely either be a Python developer today looking to evolve reliability engineering as a practice, or a strong operational lead with Python development experience. Prior experience in the financial industry is not required; candidates from software companies and other industries are welcome.Job Responsibilities- Building and maintaining knowledge front to back of Morgan Stanley s development environment- Maximizing the availability and performance of supported systems through optimized and automated plant management, ongoing problem management, and architecture reviews with dev-side peers - Reduction of the cost of support (hours of effort) through the elimination of operational issues, optimization and automation of tasks, development of operational tools and driving client self-service to minimize constraints Identification and prioritization of technical debt that is impacting client (i.e. software developers) productivity, system reliability or the efficiency of the Ops team - Collaboration with other SREs in Application Infrastructure to share solutions- Complex troubleshooting of front to back development environment issues - Maximize Ops team product knowledge and support capabilities to minimize the escalation rate to the departments feature engineers/developers Consulting with clients (the Firms development community) to maximize productivity, including troubleshooting their issues with using MSDEs solutions - Experimentation with new tools and techniques - Being operationally responsive, including sharing on-call rotation with the rest of the global team (with a time-off in lieu system), Required Skills- Strong Linux troubleshooting skills - Hands-on development experience in Python to automate tasks - Ability to write technical documentation - Familiarity in one or more of the following technology areas: o Databases and SQL o Load balancing and networking o REST API services o Web app hosting, such as Apache and TomcatDesired Skills - Experience supporting or integrating either: o Jira Enterprise (version 8 preferred) o Artifactory and the various package managers it supports, npm, nuget, maven, gradle, pypi, yum, golang and conan - Experience designing a products plant operation and support model - Experience with using version control (Bitbucket, Github), issue tracking (Jira), continuous integration (Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Github Actions), automated testing, or deployment automation - Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or Helm - Experience with Azure or AWS - Familiarity with Angular UI development for self-service forms - Prior experience in a client onboarding, client consulting or training role- Working with service level indicators/objectives (SLIs, SLOs) and Error Budgets
