Description:Position Overview: Data Modelers are systems analysts responsible for translating business requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models. The incumbent will focus on issues, such as reducing redundancy of data within an existing computer system, or improving the way in which it moves from one system to another.Essential Job Functions: Conduct/attend requirements definition meetings with end users and document system/business requirements Develop an in-depth understanding of the business processes and data in the corporation, and apply the knowledge towards developing and maintaining the Corporate Data Model and a Metadata Portal Enhance (or create, if new system) system logical data model to meet requirements, applying the Data Modeling Standards and the logical Data Naming Conventions, and apply the same enhancements in the physical data model using the Data Modeling Standards and the physical Data Naming Conventions appropriate for the specific back-end database Select the appropriate data types and sizes for the new fields added to the system data model Document definitions for all new data model constructs Document the data model enhancements in a standard document If the project involves the creation an interface between two systems, create a mapping matrix describing the correlation between the data elements in the two system data models Develop data mappings for reports to correlate data elements on reports to tables/fields in the underlying physical data model Perform analysis of system data to identify patterns, exceptions, and erroneous data Create high-level process models (activity hierarchy diagrams, data flow diagrams, workflow diagrams, system interface diagrams) to represent business processes for the area under analysis Contribute to the development of a body of generally applicable methods, procedures, and deliverables for the data modeling/business analysis function Plan for collection method, data cleansing, and normalization of enterprise data to support decision making and reporting Develop policies and procedures related to development and support of new and ongoing systems to ensure the integrity of data Coordinate data models, dictionaries, and other database documentation across multiple applications Work with data transformation teams to ensure that the model design and development is properly communicated Understand and translate business needs into data models supporting long-term solutions Work with the Application Development team to implement data strategies, build data flows, and develop conceptual data models Create logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and reduced redundancy Optimize and update logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects Maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models, along with corresponding metadata Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data modelsEducational Qualifications and Experience: Education: Bachelors degree, preferably in Math or Computer Science/Engineering Role Specific Experience: 5+ years of experience in business analysis 3+ years of experience with ERWIN (3.5 and 4.1) Hands-on data modeling experience in relational databases both for logical and physical data models including detailed knowledge of normalization techniques, forward-engineering, and reverse-engineering techniques Experience in modeling large-scale (100+ entities) relational data models Experience with modeling large-scale Dimensional Data Models geared towards active business analytics and business intelligenceCertification Requirements: None specifiedRequired Skills/Abilities: Advanced theoretical understanding of structured system development methodologies Advanced understanding of normalization techniques Familiarity with Oracle 10.x/11.x database constructs and PL/SQL Advanced knowledge of basic and advanced SQL Familiarity with various process modeling techniques (activity hierarchy diagrams, data flow diagrams, sequence diagrams, workflow diagrams, system interface diagrams) Excellent communication and facilitation skills Excellent writing/documentation skills Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environmentDesired Skills/Abilities (not required but a plus): Knowledge of one or more of the following technologies: o Data dictionaries o Enterprise application integration o Metadata registry o Master Data Management (MDM) o NoSQL o Semantics o Information Lifecycle Management o Procedural SQL o Unified Modeling Language (UML) o XML, including schema definitions (XSD and RELAX NG) and transformations
