Emergency medical technicians, often referred to as EMTs, look after injured or sick patients in emergency situations. This job requires the ability to act quickly and efficiently, as sometimes the patient may be in a critical situation. EMTs respond to emergency calls and transport patients to medical facilities in addition to performing basic first aid care. This is typically a full-time job thats carried out in shifts. Evening and weekend work are regularly required due to the nature of the role. Those well-suited to becoming an emergency medical technician are calm and friendly with a good understanding of basic medical terminology and procedures, physical strength, and great attention to detail.Emergency Medical Technician Duties and ResponsibilitiesEmergency medical technicians carry out a wide range of tasks depending on the organization they work for. They also make sure that their work area is kept clean, sanitized, and organized.Administer Basic First AidEMTs administer life support care and basic first aid to stop patient conditions from worsening before they arrive at the hospital. The EMTs goal is to keep patients alive and as healthy as possible before they can be seen by a doctor.Perform Diagnostic ProceduresFrom stomach suction to heart monitoring, EMTs carry out emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures to assess patient conditions and help keep them as safe and healthy as possible.Transport Patients to HospitalsEMTs transport patients from their home or place of injury to the ambulance, and then ensure that theyre safely and comfortably transported to the hospital.
