We strive to be world class in investing in our people and commit to developing you as a professional.Legal Counsel Khan Academy is looking for a mid-level lawyer to join our legal team as we seek to serve even more learners. Our Legal Counsel will provide broad-based transaction support as we scale our operations to meet growth in demand for our school district services. Reporting to our General Counsel and working closely with our Senior Corporate Counsel, the role will include direct support for internal business clients as well as working with other legal team members in a collaborative coverage model.If you are looking for the opportunity to make a significant impact, have a passion for education, and are interested in developing or deepening your skills in high-demand competencies relating to privacy and EdTech, this role provides a great opportunity to apply your skills and experience to help take your career and our nonprofit mission to the next level.THE ROLE
    • Provide broad based transactional support including support for sales, vendor management and major funder agreements.
    • Support our school district partnerships team, including preparation, review and negotiation of school district service contracts and support for renewals.
    • Act as a first-line business partner to one or more functional teams within the organization.
    • Responsible for review and negotiation of NDAs and basic vendor agreements.
    • Assist with review and guidance on matters relating to ownership and use of content and brand assets.
    • Assume responsibility for maintenance of certain aspects of our privacy compliance program.
    • Contribute to foundational improvements, including development of team resources such as templates, playbooks, guidance and training materials.
    • Handle other matters as need arises.
    WHAT YOU BRING
    • Must have a JD from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
    • 4-8 years of legal experience, preferably with a mix of law firm and in-house experience advising companies in the technology / online services sector.
    • Strong corporate generalist with demonstrated ability to handle a wide range of matters with minimal supervision. The role is well-suited to a motivated self-starter that wants to broaden their skill set in a role that will continue to grow with the business.
    • Some experience handling regulatory compliance matters and related contractual commitments. A solid foundation in privacy, security, & data protection will be extremely helpful.
    • Strong business judgment. You are adept at analyzing, assessing and communicating business and legal/compliance risks, and at developing practical solutions to manage risk.
    • Able to work independently and know when it is appropriate to escalate an issue or seek guidance.
    • Adept at building strong relationships and working cross-functionally.
    • Able to manage expectations and make decisions about how to prioritize the needs of various stakeholders.
    • You will need to develop and maintain a deep understanding of student data privacy regulations (FERPA, COPPA and similar state laws) that impact our operations.
    • Certification in privacy or data security (CIPP or similar) is preferred but not required.
