Staff Back End Engineer

Job Description

As a Staff Engineer Backend at Freshworks, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and scaling distributed backend systems to ensure fault-tolerance and extensibility. Your responsibilities will include:- Designing, developing, and scaling distributed backend systems that are fault-tolerant and extensible.- Taking ownership of complex modules end-to-end, from architecture to deployment to monitoring.- Defining and enforcing best practices in API design, data modeling, and service modularity.- Driving optimized code across teams, focusing on performance and maintainability.- Performing in-depth investigations into production issues and leading precise root cause analysis.- Influencing cross-team architecture decisions and determining long-term technical direction.- Collaborating with Product Managers and other engineering leads to shape backend strategy.- Coaching and mentoring engineers on design patterns, OOPS principles, and clean coding habits.- Contributing to system-level performance, availability (aiming for 99.99% uptime), and security.Qualifications required for this role include:- 9 to 12 years of experience in backend product development.- Proven track record in building and scaling high-throughput distributed systems.- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and time/space optimization techniques.- Expertise in Java (or equivalent) with practical experience in developing production APIs.- Proficiency in CI/CD, observability, and cloud-native deployments (AWS/GCP).- Experience in leading architecture reviews, creating reusable backend components, and enhancing code health across teams.- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.- Familiarity with caching, queuing systems, microservices, and database sharding.Freshworks is committed to providing equal opportunity and values diversity in the workplace, believing that it creates a more vibrant and enriching environment that supports the goals of employees, communities, and the business.
