Job Description

    Clinical Management of Patients Complete a brief admission examination on each patient when appropriate and document clinical findings. Attend ward rounds with consulting staff, as required, and be available to discuss patient treatment plans. Provide a medical service within the patient area by rotation basis. Inform primary consultant within 1 hour of the admission of patient. Inform the changes in medical condition of patients and of relevant action taken. Follow the instructions of consultants for their specific regime for each individual patient. Perform clinical procedures as requested by consultant medical staff and nursing staff, these may include phlebotomy and monitoring of intravenous drugs given to patients. Initiate and alter in-patient prescriptions at consultants request. Write up to shift out from Critical care area for patients as required. Visit patients as required at the request of the nursing staff. Visit all Critical care patients daily and document in clinical notes. To be familiar with all relevant procedures/policies. To be familiar with clinical policies. To be aware of the clinical risk programme and report clinical incidents, drug errors and near misses. To participate in clinical audit and implementation of clinical governance. To participate and assist with clinical procedures as required. He/ She should be part of the quality improvement of NABH documentation process of the hospital.OperationalTo be completely familiar with hospital equipment.To dispense drugs with senior nurse on duty.To record all treatments performed in patient notes.To provide a full report (hand over) to Resident Medical Officer commencing the next shift.To assist and resolve all TPA queries related to pre-operative, admitted and pre admission patients.Emergency To carry out CPR and other Emergency Procedures as per hospital policy, if needed. To initiate emergency treatments for patients, staff and visitors and complete appropriate documentation.In-Service Education & Promotion of the Treatment Centre Promote patient care by liaison with all departments. Participate in the in-service education programme, inclusive of CPR, Health & Safety Training and Fire and other NABH related. Ensure medical competence by continual professional development. Promote the center by showing empathy and compassion to patients, their families and friends. Promote the center by demonstrating a customer focused approach at all times to patients, consultants and staff.RelationshipsTo liaise with nursing staff regularly (at least every 3-4 hours) to check on patient progress, or more frequently if their condition necessitates. To see patients at the request of nurses in charge and carry out examinations of patients.To take blood samples from patients as may be required from time to time and to undertake arterial blood sampling as necessary.To supervise the daily clinical management of all patients in conjunction with the nurse team leaders and under the guidance of Consultants and attend all post-operative patients on day of operation and every day following.To respond to calls from the ward relating to patient care.To discuss medication on discharge with patients and write a discharge summary if requested.To assist in the day to day functions at the hospital and any other reasonable tasks, within their level of experience, requested by the hospital.To administer intravenous medications / therapy if requiredAll patient information is confidential and must be respected as all times. The RMO should be able to interpret Consultant and nursing staff requests. Administratively responsible to the Critical care coordinator. Liaises closely with nursing staff and other relevant clinical or administrative staff. Coordinate with designated mentor in order to discuss clinical (or non-clinical) situations occurring within the hospital.Health and Safety Take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves and all other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Co-operate with their employer to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation and the Health and Safety policies and procedures of the treatment center, not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare, in pursuance of any of the relevant statutory provisions.ConsultantsUnder no circumstances should RMOs seek consent for operations or procedures on behalf of a Consultant. RMOs must seek consent for any procedures that they intend to undertake.To communicate any medical problems or concerns to Consultants.To act, as may be reasonably required, on behalf of the Consultant in their absence when requested.To undertake within their level of experience and competence certain medical procedures required by the Consultants.Hospital PharmacyTo countersign any drug instructions given by Consultants over the telephone and satisfy prescribing requirements throughout the hospital, as requested by nursing staff by checking their validity, safety and need.To communicate as often as necessary with the hospitals Pharmacist in relation to the patients prescription and to adhere at all times to the British National Formulary (BNF).In exceptional circumstances, the RMO may be called to dispense drugs.
