Job Description

The Unix Administrator performs a wide variety of tasks in software/hardware maintenance and operational support of Linux and Solaris based systems. They are responsible for maintaining all hosted customer environments.General Duties/Tasks:

  • Experience with management tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.
  • Experience with Virtual Environments (preferably VMWare or AWS)
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Ruby, and shells scripts
  • Daily monitoring of the ticket queue, performing analysis of problems across multiple systems and groups
  • Planning, installation, configuration, monitoring and deployment of Solaris/Linux Servers.
  • Analyze and resolve problems with server hardware setup, tuning and troubleshooting all aspects of the Sun Solaris operating system (Solaris 10) and Linux (OEL-Oracle Enterprise Linux/Red Hat).
  • Evaluating and applying packages and security patches on Solaris and Linux servers.
  • Developing new Unix scripts to support task automation and monitoring activities.
  • Supporting and troubleshooting Solaris networking services and protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, NFS, DHCP/BOOTP, FTP, SSH, sendmail, postfix and LDAP.
  • Creating detailed How-To and Best Practices guides.
  • Perform disaster recovery testing.
  • Conduct ongoing security risk assessments including the monitoring and reporting of security and access violations.
  • Perform system wide updates, server installations, and general maintenance during monthly maintenance windows.
  • Reporting on system availability, performance and security compliance.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Respond within defined SLA metrics to issues logged in the company ticketing system.
Required Skills:
  • 5+ years of experience as a Linux system administrator.
  • Linux system administration certification is welcome.
  • Strong operating system and network knowledge in order to carry out assigned administrative tasks with the need for limited supervision.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft applications is a plus.
  • Basic working knowledge of web application security, understanding of vulnerabilities and counter measures.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities, self-direction.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner. Gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Develops alternative solutions.
  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations. Listens and gets clarification. Responds well to questions and participates in meetings.
  • Develop workable implementation plans. Communicates changes effectively.
  • Looks for ways to improve and promote quality. Ability to follow policies and procedures. Complete administrative tasks correctly and on time.
  • Ability to develop strategies to achieve organizational goals and adapt strategy to changing conditions.

  • Demonstrate leadership and foster collaborative team approach and interacts well with front line and management providing consultation and expert advice on systems related topics.

  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Subversion and GIT
  • Motivation to advance in profession.
  • Maintains a 24/7 on-call status, as required.
