Job Summary - As an Architect, you will help define and architect products, algorithms, and data systems that deeply integrate core software and services to drive innovations. You will obsess over data, metrics, algorithms, mechanisms, and incentives that unlock innovation and scalability opportunities across the company. This role is inherently cross-functional, working with core software systems across the company. About the team Business Team: Customer Experience Team Sub Team: Player The Customer Experience(CEX) team builds delightful experiences for our customers to view the amazing content across Disney+ Hotstar. We manage every aspect of the customer journey from signup to showcasing and viewing personalized content. We build fast and intuitive experiences for every segment of users, ranging from personal viewing on Mobile Phones to building living room experiences for families. Our experiences are backed by multiple distributed services scaling to serve 150+ million users. The Player team within Customer Experience plays a pivotal role in ensuring an unparalleled viewing experience for millions of our customers. This team stands at the vanguard of technological innovation, focused on developing and maintaining our proprietary player across multiple platforms including Android, iOS, TVs, Xbox, PlayStation, and various set-top boxes. The team expertly navigates complex issues such as device-specific quirks, compatibility with various streaming protocols and DRM, and adaptive bitrate algorithms, and so much more. Their work is essential to ensure the seamless performance of our player across various devices and network conditions. Reporting to - Director, CEXKey Responsibilities
• You will serve as a technical architect for the player team across different clients
• You will ensure the quality of architecture and design of systems
• You will functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions
• You will develop technical roadmaps for the player, outlining future directions and planned technological advancements
• You will ensure the high availability and scalability of our player to support millions of concurrent users, designing and implementing strategies as needed
• You will analyze and improve data quality and metrics
• Fully and completely understand system interdependencies and limitations
• You will leverage knowledge of internal and industry in design decisions
• You will take ownership of end-to-end product quality, from developing to maintaining core player frameworks that power and deliver smooth playback experiences
• You will assist in the career development of others, mentoring on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members
Skills & Attributes for success
• Minimum 12+ years of experience building large scalable systems
• Solid background with hands-on experience as a Principal-level software development engineer
• Expert knowledge of video playback, streaming protocols (HLS, DASH etc.), DRM, and low latency delivery
• Familiarity with Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) such as Akamai, Cloudflare, or AWS CloudFront
• Experience with video and audio encoding standards ( H.264, VP9, HEVC, AAC,etc ) and software ( FFmpeg, Bento4 )
• Deep expertise on playback with hands-on experience with popular client media players like Shaka, Exoplayer and AVFoundation
• In-depth understanding of Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics like start-up time, rebuffering ratio, and average bitrate and strategies for optimizing them
• Expert knowledge of specific player / device quirks
• Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and designing for performance
• Outstanding problem-solving abilities
• Ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast paced environment
• Sound business judgment, proven ability to influence others and strong analytical thinking skills
• Extensive experience of mentoring junior engineers to success
