Job Description

    Automation Technician Job DutiesAutomation technicians have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
    • Developing new automation technologies for manufacturing processes or improving existing technologies
    • Installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing industrial control systems, such as PLCs, PACs, or other computerized equipment such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or computerized process control systems (CPCS)
    • Making detailed drawings of machinery or other structures according to specifications provided by engineers
    • Installing and testing industrial controls, including computerized systems that monitor and regulate operations or machinery such as robots or automated production lines
    • Installing and repairing electrical components such as motors, switches, relays, or sensors
    • Operating computerized industrial controls such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or computerized process control systems (CPCS)
    • Analyzing work orders to determine the steps required to complete the task
    • Performing routine inspections of machinery and equipment for defects or malfunctions
    • Preparing work orders and creating reports on the status of projects
    Automation Technician Job RequirementsTo become an automation technician, you will likely need to have the following:Education:Entry-level automation technicians are required to have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Many employers prefer to hire technicians with an associates or bachelors degree in a related field, such as electronics, computer science or engineering.Training & Experience:Most employers require that candidates complete a training program before they begin working in the role of an automation technician. These programs can last from a few weeks to a few months and may include hands-on training in the use of various computer programs and equipment.Certifications & Licenses:Certifications are not usually a requirement as an automation technician, but they can make you a more competitive candidate when applying for jobs.Automation Technician SkillsAutomation technicians need the following skills in order to be successful:Technical skills:Technical skills are the knowledge and experience you have in a specific field. This can include knowledge of software, hardware and other tools used in automation. It can also include knowledge of how to troubleshoot and repair automation systems.Communication skills:Communication skills are necessary for automation technicians to convey information to their coworkers and supervisors. They also use these skills to convey information to customers and clients.
