Job Description

Position Title: Data Scientist / Senior Data Scientist- Opening for Morningstar - Product Base MNC The Group: Morningstar, Inc.s mission is to empower investor success. We were founded on the simple idea that when people have good investment information, they make better choices that lead to better outcomes. The Investment Management group consists of our Managed Portfolios and Workplace solutions teams. Within Morningstar Investment Management, LLC, the Workplace group offers a range of retirement solutions, including managed accounts, custom models, and advice service by acting in a fiduciary capacity or as an independent financial expert, as defined by ERISA: IFE, 3(28), or 3(21) capacity. The flagship product is our Morningstar Retirement Manager which provides personalized advice on how much to save for retirement, asset allocation advice, and builds portfolios for individual investors. The Workplace team consists of the investment management team, the research team, the advice engines team, the operations team, and the client services team. The goal of these teams is to work together to provide investment solutions for the individual investors retirement goals. The Role: We seek a seasoned Data Scientist to join our team of product management professionals. This person will work across our Managed Accounts platforms, Wealth Forecasting Engine (WFE), and Retirement Planning tools. You will collaborate with research, development, and QA teams to execute POCs, build prototypes/APIs, visualizations to uncover insights enabling our clients to make informed investment decisions. These research ideas leverage deep principles of Finance, Statistics, Analytics (AI/ML) and are built on large amounts of financial datasets. We are looking for an individual who possesses intellectual curiosity, strong technical & analytical skills, problem solving capability & consulting skills. Passion for researching on differentiated automated investing solutions such as robo-advice or online investment advice is preferred. This position reports to Manager, Workplace Solutions. Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute POCs on investment planning and forecasting methodologies (tax modelling, capital markets assumptions, asset allocation, tax-optimized asset location, goal planning, etc.)
  • Integrate proprietary research and financial planning concepts into a set of advice engines by working with Morningstar research, technical and modeling teams, product managers, and developers to bring intellectual property and new methodology to market.
  • Leverage principles of analytics & build Machine Learning models, enriching retirement management offerings. Checking stability, soundness, model assumptions, mathematical, statistical logic.
  • Develop automated codes in Python/R, SQL thereby improving efficiency of investment research ideas.
  • Build rich dashboards to support research (interactive/automated/visual) that improve the interpretability of retirement management solutions.
  • Supporting ongoing model runs in model development process, research new methodologies.
Requirements:
  • 2-4 yrs. experience working as a full stack Data Scientist experimenting & deploying projects.
  • Professional experience developing models for financial decision-making (investment, retirement, or savings)
  • Good working knowledge of Python/R, databases and SQL is essential.
  • Knowledge of quantitative (econometrics, statistics, mathematics, physics) finance.
  • Quantitative/statistical skills in areas like Regression /Forecasting /Machine learning etc. Knowledge of optimization, Monte Carlo simulations is preferred.
  • Ability to storyboard/visualize data using Tableau/ Python/ R.
  • Knowledge of AWS, Numerical computation Python packages and artificial intelligence is a plus.
  • Bachelors degree in finance, economics, mathematics, engineering, computer science or related field is required. A Masters degree or CFA are all highly desired.
