Job Description Responsible for mixing, matching, and applying paint to various surfaces, completing touchups, and coordinating large painting projects.Prepares wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting, and paints parts, equipment, interiors, and exteriors of ships, boats, and shipyard and marina buildings, using brushes, spray guns, and rollers: Mixes solvents according to formula, and immerses parts in solution or washes surfaces to remove grease, rust, scale, and dirt. Fills cracks and holes with patching plaster, putty, or plastic wood.Brushes and rubs filler material into grained wood to prepare surfaces for painting.Painter Responsibilities 1) Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other structures: Reads work order or receives instructions from supervisor or homeowner regarding painting.2) Smooths surfaces, using sandpaper, brushes, or steel wool, and removes old paint from surfaces, using paint remover, scraper, wire brush, or blowtorch to prepare surfaces for painting.3) Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other filler, using caulking gun and putty knife.4) Selects premixed paints, or mixes required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.5) Removes fixtures, such as pictures and electric switchcovers, from walls prior to painting, using screwdriver.6) Spreads dropcloths over floors and room furnishings, and covers surfaces, such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.7) Paints surfaces, using brushes, spray gun, or paint rollers.8) Simulates wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.9) Applies paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers to create special effects.10) Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level.11) May be designated according to type of work performed as Painter, Interior Finish; Painter, Maintenance; or according to type of material used as Calciminer; Varnisher.12) May also hang wallpaper and fabrics.13) May wash surfaces prior to painting with mildew remover, using brush.Paint might be literally superficial, but a good paint job or a bad one makes a huge difference in the look, and feel of a building, office space, or home. While many people paint their own interiors, most have to hire a professional if they want a professional-quality job. And hiring a professional is usually a must for painting exteriors.You do not need a degree, nor do you need to complete a specialized training program to paint, but in most states, you do need a license and you must know how to paint properly in order to receive your license. You will also need to get insurance to protect you from liability should anything go wrong.Painting interiors and exteriors are, in many ways, two separate jobs, since the paint types and the required tools are different for each. You can choose to do one or both.Construction and Maintenance Painter TrainingMost painters learn their trade on the job. They learn how to prepare surfaces, apply coating, hang wall covering, and match colors. Painters may have to complete additional safety training in order to work with scaffolding and harnesses.Although less common, workers who have a high school diploma or equivalent and who are at least 18 years old can become painters through a 3- or 4-year apprenticeship. For each year of a typical program, apprentices complete at least 144 hours of technical instruction and 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training before becoming journey workers.
