The Red Hat Customer Experience and Engagement (CEE) team is looking for a solid Linux sustaining Principal Software Maintenance Engineer to join our worldwide support team in Pune, India. In this role, you will get a great opportunity to become part of a fast-paced, innovative company that is changing the way software is developed, sold, and supported. You ll work as part of the Global Support Engineering team, which is dedicated to resolving the issues of our enterprise customers quickly and effectively. You ll help us provide high-level technical support and sustaining engineering services designed to maximize uptime and reduce IT costs. As a Principal Software Maintenance Engineer, you will maintain close working relationships with our customers top developers and architects and you will assist our front-line support engineers with the most complex and challenging issues. Daily contact with our R&D team will allow you to regularly work alongside some of the brightest open source developers on the planet. Primary job responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to Red Hat s enterprise customers
  • Work with Red Hat s enterprise customers across the globe on a 24/7 basis; this will require you to work in different shifts periodically
  • Resolve complex customer problems within Red Hats storage and clustering offerings
  • Analyze upstream development against current customer-reported defects and develop patches to resolve the issues
  • Use available tools to investigate and troubleshoot technical issues
  • Record customer interactions, including investigation, troubleshooting, and the resolution of issues
  • Work closely with Red Hats production support engineers, technical account managers, and development engineering teams
  • Demonstrate considerable judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
  • Manage your workload to ensure that all customer issues are timely handled and driven to resolution
  • Assist in the development of comprehensive and reusable self-service solutions for future incidents
Required skills
  • 5+ years of experience working as a support, sustaining, or development engineer or other directly related experience in an enterprise environment
  • Outstanding understanding of the current Linux kernel with emphasis on storage subsystems
  • Solid understanding of hardware and computer architecture including Intel 64 and AMD64; additional architectures is a plus
  • Solid development experience with C and familiarity with established open source methodologies
  • Experience writing scripts using Bash and Python to troubleshoot and correct Linux issues
  • Experience with Linux crash dump analysis (vmcore analysis) with the crash tool is a plus
Solid experience in one or more of the following technology areas in a software engineering, analytical or development capacity:
  • The Linux 2.6 virtual memory subsystem
  • The Linux 2.6 SCSI subsystem
  • Linux storage device drivers
  • Locally attached storage, including IDE/ATA and SAS/PAS
  • Storage area networks, storage virtualization, and fiber channel attached storage, including iSCSI/FCoE
  • High-availability clustering and clustered shared-storage file systems
  • Common Linux file systems, e.g., ext2, 3 and 4, XFS, reiserfs, etc.
  • Redundant storage systems, e.g., RAID, multipath I/O, and distributed storage
