Job Description

    Transportation engineers are responsible for the planning, design and construction of transportation systems. They work with a wide range of projects including roadways, bridges, airports, railways, bike paths, sidewalks and more.Transportation engineers may specialize in one area or several areas of transportation engineering. Some common specialties include traffic engineering, highway engineering, rail engineering, aviation engineering, marine engineering, etc.Transportation Engineer Job DutiesTransportation engineers have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
    • Ensuring that construction projects meet safety regulations and adhere to industry best practices
    • Providing expert witness testimony in court cases involving traffic accidents or other incidents related to transportation design
    • Conducting market research on new technologies that could impact their field
    • Collaborating with architects and interior designers to ensure that new structures meet federal requirements such as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for wheelchair access or the use of Braille signage
    • Conducting feasibility studies to determine the best methods of transportation in an area, such as public versus private transportation, or air travel versus rail travel
    • Analyzing current traffic patterns to determine whether changes need to be made to improve efficiency
    • Designing street layouts and identifying where new roads should be built or old roads should be reconstructed based on projected traffic patterns
    • Conducting community outreach to educate the public about potential construction projects and other policies that may impact their daily lives
    • Drafting construction plans for new roads or public transportation systems, including identifying sources of funding for the projects
