Job Description

  • Tool and die makers build fixtures using tools and dies, which are material-shaping devices. Often, the tool and die maker also creates the dies used to build new fixtures.
  • They know how to take apart molds, jigs, tools, and fixtures as well as how to put these items back together again.
  • Tool and die makers read blueprints and complicated schematics in order to manufacture new fixtures, tools, and machine parts.
  • Tool and die makers troubleshoot dies and molds and perform repairs on dies, molds, and tools as needed.
  • When tools and dies are completed, these professionals carefully inspect these items for any signs of imperfection or damage that may affect their functionality.
  • They are also responsible for performing regular tests on all equipment and tools used in manufacturing to ensure high quality.
  • For safetys sake, tool and die makers must keep their work area clean and well-organized at all times
  • Use sketches, blueprints, specifications and models to plan operations for the fabrication of dies, tools and assemblies, ensuring safety and maximum efficiency
  • Verify dimensions of finished parts to ensure they conform to specifications using dial indicators, gauge blocks, calipers and micrometers
  • Utilize hand and machine tools to assemble parts of tools and dies and to repair and modify gauges, jigs and diesDesign templates and jigs to be used as work aids for convenient fabrication of products and parts
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems and perform repairs on tools, manually operated dies and progressive dies
  • Interface with external and internal customers, handle supplier and customer concerns, and work with team members to solve problems during the production process
  • File and finish workpieces using the appropriate hand tools to ensure products are smooth and that they fit together properly
  • Select the appropriate metals and materials to be used based on properties, ensuring they meet project specifications
