Job Description

A dermatologist assistant is a physician assistant who works with dermatology patients to diagnose and treat skin conditions, such as with cancer screenings and biopsies of the skin. They also assist in cosmetic procedures like chemical peels, dermabrasion and tattoo removal.A dermatologist assistant works directly with patients in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices under the supervision of a dermatologist. They focus on skin, hair, and nail conditions, including surgery and cosmetics. Duties include taking medical histories, performing medical exams, ordering diagnostic tests, interpreting results, and developing treatment plans. Dermatologist assistants educate patients on skin health and provide preventive services, such as skin cancer screenings. They work closely in collaboration with a supervising physician as required by law. Depending on the specific job, dermatologist assistants can work weekends or evenings, and may need to be on call.Non-Clinical Administrative SkillsPhysicians practices seek medical assistants who enjoy interacting with people, have an eye for detail, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment. The dermatologist may ask a medical assistant to take a patients medical history in advance of a procedure and prepare specimens for lab work. They may also be called upon to provide follow up consultation with patients. Such duties may include answering questions about skin care products commonly prescribed or recommended by the dermatologists for the treatment of conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriasis.
