Job Description

Seafood procurement, import, and export involve managing the complex, time-sensitive, and highly regulated global supply chain of fresh and frozen marine products. Professionals in this field ensure the safe, compliant, and cost-effective movement of seafood from vessels or farms to international markets.Core Duties & Responsibilities
• Procurement & Sourcing:Identifying and vetting suppliers, negotiating prices, and purchasing seafood products that meet quality and sustainability standards (e.g., MSC certification).
• Logistics Management:Coordinating the cold chain, including refrigerated shipping (reefers), air freight, and warehousing to maintain product integrity.
• Regulatory Compliance:Ensuring compliance with international trade regulations, including FDA, NMFS, and FWS in the U.S., and equivalent foreign bodies.
• Documentation & Customs:Preparing and verifying crucial documents such as Bills of Lading, Certificates of Origin, health certificates, and catch certificates (e.g., NOAA Fisheries trade documentation).
• Quality Assurance (QA):Verifying product specifications, temperature control, and safety standards (HACCP) upon receipt and shipment.
• Inventory & Cost Control:Managing inventory levels to meet market demand while minimizing spoilage, utilizing ERP software for tracking.
Core Skills & Qualifications
• Technical Knowledge:Deep understanding of seafood species, quality grading, processing methods, and preservation techniques.
• Regulatory Knowledge:Familiarity with international trade laws, Incoterms, and specific import/export documentation requirements.
• Supply Chain & Logistics:Experience in cold chain logistics, freight forwarding, and inventory management systems.
• Negotiation & Communication:Strong negotiation skills for procurement and relationship management with international suppliers and brokers.
• Analytical Skills:Ability to analyze market trends, price fluctuations, and demand forecasting.
• Attention to Detail:Critical for managing compliance documents to prevent customs delays.
• Language Skills:Proficiency in foreign languages is highly valued for international negotiations.
Key Import/Export Requirements
• HACCP & Food Safety:Strict adherence to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point systems is mandatory.
• Traceability:Documentation that tracks the product from vessel/farm to the final importer to prevent Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing products from entering the market.
• Customs Clearance:Proper HTS code classification for taxes and duties, and timely filing of entry documentation (e.g., ISF).
• Certifications:Familiarity with BRC (British Retail Consortium) or other global food safety standards.
Technology Proficiency
• ERP Systems:Experience with SAP, Oracle, or industry-specific software.
• Data Analysis:Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, V-lookups) for tracking inventory and costs.
• Digital Platforms:Familiarity with online trading, booking, and tracking platforms.
