Job Description

Occupational health and safety officers coordinate health and safety systems in an organisation. They identify hazards and assess risks to health and safety, put appropriate safety controls in place, and provides advice on accident prevention and occupational health to management and employees.

On occasions when accidents do occur, it is the Health and Safety Officer who leads the investigations, identifies the causes and advises on improvements in safety standards that need to be made. Safety officers also liaise with other agencies and internal staff over health and safety issues.

Supervision and leadership, Management in HSE, General safety, Security control & monitoring, Environment control & monitoring , Occupational health, Behavioural based safety management, safe work method statement / J.S.A., power Lifting / Rigging operation, Gas testing and monitoring, Confined space safety, Electrical safety, working at height, radiography (X-Ray), welding and cutting, abrasive blasting, Hazard analysis and risk assessment, Painting, Hazard material, power tools, Lock out and tag out, Waste management, Defensive driving, Heat stress management, handling, Crane operations safety, excavation safety, safety in scaffolding work, Heat related illness, fire extinguisher, Noise control and monitoring will all fall under the safety Manager s purview.

Promote occupational health and safety within the organisation and develop safer and healthier ways of working

Develop occupational health and safety systems, including policies, programs, procedures and manuals.

Assist in complying with current health and safety legislation and/or regulations with the objective of ensuring that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect the safety and health of learners, staff and visitors;

Communicate frequently with management to report on the status of the occupational health and safety program

Make sure that the organisation is aware of, and complies with, all legislation in relation to the use of its plant, equipment and substances, as well as in all workplace activities

To increase health and safety awareness at all levels within the organization;

To coordinate the training of personnel in areas of safety, including first aid, CPR, accident prevention and investigation, work place inspections and other matters related to implementing safety procedures.

Establish budget proposals for the operation of the Occupational Health and Safety office and specific training programs;

Make sure that personal protective equipment, such as dust masks, safety glasses, footwear and safety helmets, is being used in workplaces according to regulations

Inspect and test machinery and equipment, such as lifting devices, machine shields and scaffolding, to make sure they meet safety regulations

Qualifications

Eligibility is s/he

(i) possesses a recognized degree in any branch of engineering or technology or architecture and had a practical experience of working in a building or other construction work in a supervisory capacity for a period of not less than two years or possesses a recognized diploma in any branch of engineering or technology and has had practical experience of building or other construction work in a supervisory capacity for a period of not less than five years;

(ii) possesses a recognized degree or diploma in industrial safety with at least one paper in construction safety (as an elective subject);
