Job DescriptionGemologist basically analysis gems and stones, to determine, quality, value, authenticity, composition and weight. They are experts in detecting defects, imperfections, concealed imperfection, rarity, and other features of a good stone and gem. Other functions include the following.
  • Assign preliminary conclusions to gemstone grading reports or give back-up to preliminary reports.
  • Input gemstone identification information in information system.
  • Keep abreast of latest gemological information within the industry.
  • Examine and identify gemstone materials using standard, high-tech, and specialty gemstone testing equipment.
  • Immerses stones in prescribed chemical solutions to determine specific gravities and key properties of gemstones or substitutes, which show physical characteristics of stone for gem identification, quality determination, and for appraisal.
  • Grades stones for color, perfection, and quality of cut.
  • Estimates wholesale and retail value of gems, following pricing guides, market fluctuations, and various economic changes that affect distribution of precious stones.
  • May also advise customers and others in use of gems to create attractive jewelry items
