Job Description

Position Overview: WRI India is looking to hire a Lead Researcher to work on its Flagship study Agro-Ecological System-Based Approaches for Doubling Farmers Income (DFI) in India lead by its Economics Centre in New Delhi. The ideal candidate should have considerable domain knowledge and experience in the areas of agro-ecological and environmental economics, sustainable agriculture, food systems, agri-marketing practices and value chain. The chosen candidate will work under the supervision of WRI India s Chief Economist and work closely with other Team leads comprising of a diverse range of experts in the field of environmental modelling & valuation, payment for ecosystem services, landscape design & regional planning, GIS / remote sensing, climate change and environmental sustainability. The primary endeavour of this team is to collate, review and synthesize all initiatives and suggested interventions to inform policies, plans and projects at the national, regional and local levels in India for strengthening backward and forward linkages of agroecological systems to achieve the objective of doubling farmers income. Responsibilities:

  • Be the focal point for all aspects of agro-ecological economic analyses for the study on DFI and contribute to the portfolio of research projects with Agroecology objective.
  • Be able to provide economic insight to the strategy, research and analytical studies conducted by the team. Identify, collate agro-ecological approaches literature and analyse datasets related to India s agricultural landscape. Conduct meta-analysis of literature and datasets to produce a synthesis report.
  • Support the Team Leads & other Experts on various activities and coordinate with Project Associates to develop economic insights from spatial data for the selected geography.
  • Organise internal workshops and lead various discussions with a set of stakeholders and participate in external meetings, roundtable discussions and conferences and represent organizational interests.
  • Prepare presentations, analytical reports and research papers to concisely capture various insights for the dissemination of these findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Be able to take on assignments that require a fair amount of travel in India or abroad and to the selected geography for detailed case study for its replication and scaling.
  • Any other work assigned by the Chief Economist & other Team Leads.
Qualifications and Requirements: Ph.D. or Master s Degree (or higher) in Economics / Agronomy/Natural Resource Management/Agri-Business with learning on Agricultural /Environmental/Developmental - Economics/Management/Market Research 10-15 years of relevant work experience in conducting field based research on advanced studies on agro-ecological systems/other ecosystems valuation, smart agriculture, value chain analysis, marketing, economic instruments, , SDGs and Climate Change linkages with ecosystems. Good knowledge of Agriculture policy, Food security scenario in India Should have domain knowledge on landscape/regional approaches and sociology/anthropology/rural development. Clear understanding of research methodologies, demonstrated data management skills, qualitative and quantitative techniques to aid in data analysis. Highly proficient in the use of MS office tools, SPSS and other analytical software. Experience in developing conclusions and policy & practice recommendations from research evidence and demonstrated writing abilities and Cross-disciplinary portfolio with experience of working with the entire spectrum of stakeholders-government, corporate, NGO, primary stakeholders etc. Experience in developing frameworks integrating public, private and sector for agricultural development Be able to take on the responsibilities described above with a high level of independence. ,
