Job Description

Veterinary Policy AdviserPosition Objectives:

  • To use veterinary knowledge to encourage improvements in the animal welfare policies of the government and other bodies and organisations
  • To address emergencies and conduct hands-on work with animals when required
Reports To:Director of veterinary affairsLocation: Mumbai or DelhiPrimary Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Use knowledge of veterinary medicine and animal welfare to persuade the government, the general public and veterinary universities and other organisations to treat animals more humanely
  • Upon passage of a new animal-friendly policy, work with the government or other relevant parties to achieve enforcement
  • Establish and maintain effective and useful contacts, including in the government, in order to further PETA s mission
  • Research animal protection laws as well as positions of the government, teaching institutions and other bodies and organisations about animal welfare issues
  • Develop and manage plans and agendas and achieve suitable progress with the government, veterinary associations, universities and other bodies and organisations by writing letters, organising meetings, giving talks, attending conferences, participating in committees and engaging in other ways
  • Be part of an investigative team or conduct independent research and investigations on cruelty-to-animals issues and prepare or review investigative materials and reports as requested and required for the advancement of campaigns
  • Brainstorm new and creative ways to advocate animal protection issues and further PETA s mission
  • Work with lawyers and through the courts to further PETA s campaigns, as needed
  • Take steps to encourage the police and other relevant authorities to act on cruelty cases, as needed
  • Work with various PETA teams, including those dealing with campaigns, the media, celebrities and online marketing
  • Communicate with activists, teaching institutions, organisations and the government via letters, phone calls and meetings
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to government officials and others in order to make the case for animal welfare changes
  • Assist the director of veterinary affairs in liaising with staff at Animal Rahat
  • Respond to emergency cases and participate in PETA s emergency response system, as needed
  • Represent PETA to the media and the general public
  • Attend meetings in order to brainstorm and develop strategies
  • Travel when necessary to attend meetings or news conferences
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
  • Fluent in Hindi
  • Knowledge of other local Indian languages a plus
  • Veterinary degree
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns
  • Proven ability to work hands-on with animals while ensuring the animals welfare at all times
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations as well as address and overcome objections
  • Proven ability to work creatively and generate new strategies and ideas
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organise and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to interact and communicate with a variety of people in a professional manner
  • Ability to represent the organisation to the public in a professional manner
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
